So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Subdividing edges
Instead of selecting a face and subdividing that, I can pick specific edges to cut. In the case of my window, if I select just the top and bottom edges, Subdivide only cuts those two edges and leaves the left and right edges intact. My single face becomes two:
