It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Flattening with Loop Cut and Slide
One way I can do that is with yet another Loop Cut and Slide. As you pull the new edge loop closer to the base, you can see the impact on the Subdivision Surface Modifier. The closer you get to the existing edge, the flatter the base gets:
The new edge loop's placement has a direct impact on the curvature of the base.
