Once I have an edge loop selected, there may be a situation where I want to move it and have it adapt to the shape that is already established. An example is one of the edge loops in my fingers. I would like that to be better aligned with the actual joint. If I were to move that edge loop in a normal manner, the edges would keep their exact lengths and angles as they travel. In my case, it is deforming the finger and I'd like to keep my adjustments to a minimum.
Blender also has an Edge Slide feature. By default, Edge Slide adjusts the edges and their angles based on the distance to the next edge. This brings less distortion to the original shape:
