I have twelve squares in my model, which is just a starting point. To differentiate the border of the pane from the glass portion, I want a smaller rectangle inside each one of the existing pane faces. You can certainly achieve that with tools you are already familiar with, but it is also a great application for another tool in Blender called Inset.
The Inset tool will take the outline of the currently selected face(s) and allow you to make a larger or smaller copy. Again, Blender will automatically add all the necessary vertices, edges, and faces to adjust your model and keep it clean.
