The situation where a face normal is flipped will also cause non-manifold edges. The edge may be connected to two faces, but their normals are contradicting each other. One face is pointing in one direction and the other is pointing the opposite way. The sudden switch from the inside and outside of the object would not make sense in real life. Once that face normal is corrected, the edge is corrected as well:
