If it is easier, you can also choose to model the shape of the hand in 2D form by starting with a plane. You can go through all the same steps of Loop Cut and Slide, Extrude Region, and scaling. The difference is, your work would be simplified and limited to 2D. You can scale without worrying about messing up the thickness of fingers. You can move vertices without worrying about another one on the bottom getting left behind. Once you have faces for the shape of your hand, you could extrude them all at once to make the shape 3D.
