Bales in 1950 talked about maintaining an equilibrium or balance between the demands of group task and group relationship. The fact that task and relationship aspects of groups are still used 60 years later as the primary language to describe group process is evidence of the accuracy with which these dimensions identify crucial group issues. All groups have task and relationship components and issues. The balance of these components depends on the purpose of the group. Some groups are heavily task focused; in others, relationships developed among members are of primary importance.
