Small Group Facilitation: Improving Process and Performance in Groups and Teams

Member Relationship (Maintenance) Roles
You may note that some of the roles from Benne and Sheat’s research have similarities to facilitation. If group members perform these roles and perform them well, the facilitator’s job will be easier and the group’s involvement stronger. There are times, however, when a facilitator may feel that an action by a member diverts the group’s attention from something that should be addressed. A compromiser, for instance, might step in too quickly to seek middle ground before all ideas have been fully explored. Thus, although these roles are considered positive, timing is important and the facilitator should pay attention to this issue.
