近年、スマートフォンゲームはますます身近なものとなっていますが、
利用者が増えると同時に、ゲーム開発の基盤となるソフトウェア＝ゲーム
エンジンの進化が著しくなっているのをご存じでしょうか。このモバイル
ゲームエンジンの進化により、高品質な3D コンテンツ制作が容易になり、
XRアプリケーション開発の効率化を支えています（図 8-1）。
XRアプリケーション開発では、リアルタイムの3Dグラフィック処理
や、各種デバイスとの連携が求められます。ゲームエンジンはこれらの機
能を総合的に提供し、開発者に最適な環境を提供してくれます。
ゲームエンジンのUnity
モバイルゲームエンジンの代表格はUnityといいます（図 8-2）。米
UnityTechnologies社が提供するゲームエンジンで、世界中のゲーム開発
者に広く支持されているプラットフォームです。
Unityは、iOS、Android、Windows、macOS、Web な ど、 マルチプラッ
トフォームに対応しているため、一度作成したXRアプリケーションを複
数のプラットフォームで利用でき、開発の効率化が見込めます。また、
XR体験には欠かせないリアルタイムレンダリングと高度なグラフィック
機能を備えており、高品質なCG モデルを作成できます。
