Troubleshooting performance issues

Performance issues can occur on the network because of packet loss, latency, and jitter. Packet loss and latency can be measured using the ping commands. However, the ping commands will not take the exact DSCP values and hence the quality of service for these ping packets would be different than the actual application. This can be measured using the extended ping commands.

Performance issues can also be due to MTU issues, where the network has a lower MTU than what the applications are using and hence the routers have to fragment packets. This can be detected with the extended ping commands using the do not fragment option as discussed earlier.
