Ring and star topologies

The two most common topologies seen in the campus network are the ring and the star topologies. Ring topologies are more common in manufacturing plants where multiple small buildings need to be connected, and the physical fiber topology is a closed loop. In an enterprise network, the star topology is the preferred topology. The two topologies are shown in the following figure for the access layer of the network:
