Parallelly, IEEE also created an extension of the original specification that came to be known as IEEE 802.11b that used the unlicensed 2.4 GHz spectrum band and hence was much cheaper. This standard provided speeds of up to 11 Mbps and hence was comparable to the use of 10Mbps Ethernet at the time and thus became much more acceptable.
