Typical servers run at an average CPU utilization of about 20% in the DC. Each server consumed a lot of power, and administrators were looking at ways to improve the utilization of the IT infrastructure. This led the server administrators to run multiple applications on the same server, and hence achieve better utilization of the CPU cycles of the servers. This approach led to the extinction of boundaries between different applications, as they were running on the same hardware. Any single application malfunction leading to changes at the OS level meant that all applications running on the server would be impacted as they were running on the same OS.
