Troubleshooting the network

Troubleshooting an IP network becomes easier if one follows the networking basics and follows the traffic flow. Troubleshooting typically starts from the user to the application. A methodical approach would help the engineer get to the issue faster. The steps, in this case, are shown as follows:

  • Is user able to connect to the network?
  • Is the user able to get an IP address through DHCP?
  • Is the user able to reach the first layer 3 hop?
  • Is the user able to reach the application server?
  • Is the user experiencing performance issues?
