Mixed mode operation/interoperability

The choice of the frequency band to use for the WLAN deployment in the organization depends upon multiple factors and might be influenced by the following factors:

  • Deployment location: Some countries might not allow the use of 5 GHz band for WLANs and hence the only option is to use 2.4 GHz band and thus use 802.11n.
  • Performance considerations: 5 GHz band provides much wider channels and hence greater bandwidth. 5 GHz is the choice if you want peak performance.
  • Existing device base: Since a lot of legacy devices will support 802.b/g devices that operate only in the 2.4 GHz band, one might be forced to defer the use of 802.11ac that operates only in the 5 GHz range. The network designer might also consider ...
