SNMP traps

Trap operations allow an SNMP agent to send unsolicited notifications that an event has occurred. Traps often termed fire and forget are sent on a best effort basis using User Datagram Protocol (UDP). All Cisco devices are capable of generating SNMP traps to notify NMS applications of network events. Cisco routers and switches implement the Cisco syslog MIB as a means of generating SNMP traps in place of or in addition to syslog messages covered in a later section.

Note that SNMP traps are purely reactive, as they are generated in response to an "event" that has already occurred. If the goal is to proactively collect information and ensure that issues are prevented than corrected, we need to collect information from the devices ...
