Troubleshooting forwarding plane issues

Forwarding plane is concerned with the forwarding of packets after the routing decisions have been taken. The forwarding of packets can still be blocked due to link congestion, and the application of access control lists (ACLs) on any interfaces.

Forwarding plane issues can also manifest themselves as brownouts, where the packets are not totally blocked, but the service is severely degraded due to link congestion or other factors leading to packet loss, excessive latency, or jitter on the network. We shall discuss the brownout scenario in the next section.
