IP Service Level Assurance (IP-SLA)

Cisco IP-SLAs use traffic probes to monitor the performance of the network on the data plane. Using IP-SLA, the network operators can find the actual service levels being delivered to a user, based on the forwarding plane parameters, such as protocol and DSCP bits. IP-SLA provides an actual user experience that is more refined than a ping, which only sends ICMP packets to check reachability.

IP-SLAs send data across the network to measure the performance between multiple network locations or across multiple network paths.
