By far the most troublesome issues to detect are the device related issues, where the device behaves erratically and there is no obvious reason.
Device level issues can be attributed to a hardware or software version running on the devices. A hardware-level issue is relatively easy to troubleshoot if the entire line card or a device is faulty. If this happens to be a port amongst a pool of ports on a card, this would still be tricky. A software issue, on the other hand, is the trickiest part, as the software behaving erratically due to a software bug can be transient and might not always provide the right output through show commands to troubleshoot.
