DNS-based security

Recent advances in security have led to systems that use Domain Name Services (DNS) to prevent security attacks. All users make a DNS query for a host as the first step when they access any service such as email, web browsing, and so on.

Cisco has an offering called Umbrella where all DNS requests are routed to a DNS server that keeps track of malicious domains and the malicious domains are not resolved in the first place, thus preventing the users from accessing any malicious websites. The Umbrella offering also provides a web proxy service for suspected domains, and ensures that the users are not impacted even if they go to domains which are not confirmed dark domains, but can potentially harm the users.
