Advanced Boot Options menu A menu that lets you troubleshoot problems, refresh or reset your PC, or restore it from a restore point or image file.

app A shorthand term for a software application.

app bar A bar that appears at the bottom or top of the screen in the Start screen and in Windows 8 apps with icons to launch certain features and options.

app switching A feature that lets you switch from one Windows 8 app to another.

Automatic Repair A feature that tries to fix boot-up problems in Windows by restoring key system and start-up files.

BitLocker A feature that encrypts your hard drive or an external device to protect it from unauthorized access.

charm An icon that appears on the Charms bar providing access to specific features, including Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings.

Charms bar A bar that appears on the right side of the Start screen, Apps screen, desktop, and other screens in Windows 8, offering access to various “charms,” or icons for searching, sharing, devices, and settings.

contracts A feature used by developers that lets Windows 8 apps and features share certain information and capabilities with each other.

desktop The traditional desktop familiar to Windows users, but now set up as an app within Windows 8.

Devices A charm that lets you send content to printers and other devices.

Ease of Access A series of features designed to enhance the screen or turn on a Narrator for people who may have vision problems.
