The great civilizations of Greece, Etruria,
and Rome represented the beginning of the
Western European world. The Greeks adapted
the Phoenician alphabet and modified it into a
system of twenty-five characters. The Greek
Ionic alphabet included five vowels (A, E, I, O,
U), and written language read from left to right;
however, there were still no visual separations
between words and sentences, nor was there
any punctuation.
