In the 1980s, many zoos around the world
started to redefine the habitats for their animals
from tiny wire-mesh, iron-barred, and concrete
cages to simulations of their own natural habi-
tats. One of the first institutions to embrace this
groundbreaking approach in the United States
was the Cincinnati Zoo, the nation’s third largest
zoo (65.4 acres, 26.5 ha).
