Morris Lapidus’s (1902–2001) first hotel com-
mission provided him with an opportunity to
single-handedly redefine the modern hotel, as
well as an entire district of Miami Beach that
included the Sans Souci (1949), the Nautilus
(1950), the Algiers (1950), the Biltmore Terrace
(1951), and the DiLido (1952)—all in the center
of the city on Collins Avenue.
