During the 1960s and 1970s, most urban
waterfronts throughout the world were seen
as long-neglected industrial wastelands. That
perception, held by civic leaders, real estate
developers, and inhabitants of those cities,
started to drastically change in 1985 with the
opening and revitalization of New York City’s
South Street Seaport.
Prior to 1985, this reclaimed 3.5 acre
(1.4 ha) area of lower Manhattan was overrun
with wholesale fish markets, unadorned clam
