Jean Widmer (b. 1929) was born in Frauenfeld,
Switzerland, and studied at the Kunstgewerbe-
schule in Zurich, where he was influenced by
the teachings of the color theorist Johannes
Itten (1888–1967), a former “master” instructor
at the Bauhaus (1919; see page 75). In 1952, he
moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-
Arts before becoming an art director at the
department store Galeries Lafayette in 1959.
