In the early 1900s with the advent of the auto-
mobile, drive-in service stations started to
become more of a necessity and more apparent
on the American road.
Initially, drivers purchased gasoline at a
variety of venues—liveries, repair shops, or
general stores. They would pour the purchased
gasoline into a bucket and then funnel it into
their gas tank. This primitive and dangerous
