Inspired by the successful Quisiana Automat
in Berlin, Germany, Joseph Horn (1861–1941)
and Frank Hardart (1850–1918) opened their
first Horn & Hardart Automat restaurant in
1902 in Philadelphia, with the first New York
City–based Automats opening in Times Square
and Union Square in 1912. As one of the first
fast-food restaurant chains in the United States,
Horn & Hardart Automats quickly became
popular in northern industrial cities during the
Great Depression due to their offering of simple
food, quick turnaround, and low prices. These
