Characteristics of Web Server Software
A Web server is a combination software/hardware computing platform required to service common Internet service requests such as the following:
Serving up Web pages
Providing access to FTP sites
Providing connections to databases
Acting as an email server (optional)
Acting as a newsgroup server (optional)
Performing e-commerce functions (optional)
The term Web server is also used to refer to the actual Web server software. The performance of any given Web server is actually the result of the interaction between four key areas, as shown in Figure 12.6.
