The Role of Heading Styles in Outlining

Outlining works seamlessly with the heading styles you may already have inserted in your documents. Or, if you haven't applied heading styles, Word can add them for you automatically, while you work on your outline. Each heading style corresponds to a specific outline level in your document: Heading 1 corresponds to the first level of your outline, Heading 2 the second level, and so forth.

You can't change the outline level associated with a built-in heading style though, as you'll see later in this chapter, you can assign any outline level you want, from 1 to 9, to other styles, and use those styles as the basis for your outline. This was not possible in versions of Word prior to Word 97.
