The LISTNUM field inserts—within or at the beginning of paragraphs—a sequence of numbers that can automatically update.

LISTNUM switches correspond to the three "legacy" AUTONUM fields left over from earlier versions of Word:
| Switch | What It Does |
|---|---|
| LegalDefault | Includes default legal numbering (equivalent to AUTONUMLGL). |
| NumberDefault | Includes default numbering (equivalent to AUTONUM). |
| OutlineDefault | Includes default outline numbering (equivalent to AUTONUMOUT). |
In addition, LISTNUM includes two field-specific switches:

| \l | Specifies a level for the list. |
| \s | Specifies a start-at value for the list, overriding the default setting of 1. |
