デスクトップ環境、すなわちPC環境というと、利用者の机の上などに処
理を行う装置（パーソナルコンピュータ端末、以下 PC 端末）が置かれ、そ
の装置の中にCPU やメモリなどがある形態が思い浮かぶでしょう。
1 台のPC端末を複数名で共用し、交代で利用するケースもありますが、
最近では基本的に1 人1 台、専用のPC端末を利用しています。1人 1 人が
自分の目の前にあるPC端末を利用している環境を物理とすると、デスク
トップ仮想化とは、いったい何を仮想化するのでしょうか。
デスクトップ仮想化とは、1台の物理的なコンピュータ上に複数の仮想
的なデスクトップ環境を作り出す技術で、ネットワークを介して、複数の
利用者が同時にアクセスして必要な作業を行うことができます（図5-1）。
具体的には、物理的なコンピュータ上に複数の仮想マシンを作成し、それ
ぞれの仮想マシン上に必要なソフトウェア・アプリケーションをインスト
ールし、利用者は自分専用の仮想マシン（仮想デスクトップ）にアクセス
する方式です。
デスクトップ仮想化の種類
デスクトップ仮想化にはいくつかの形態（種類）があります（図5-2）。
ホスト型と呼ばれる形態では、物理的なコンピュータ上に仮想マシンを作
成し、それぞれの仮想マシンに必要なソフトウェア・アプリケーションを
