AWS の Lambda や Fargate など、サーバーレスコンピューティングの基盤に
使われているFirecraker について紹介します。利用者がサーバーの存在や
管理を意識せずに、これらのコンピューティングサービスを利用できます。
Firecrackerとは、AWS が開発したオープンソースタイプの Linux カーネ
ル上で動作する仮想化技術で、非常に軽量であることが特徴です。
Firecrackerは、KVM（Kernel-based Virtual Machine）という仮想化機
能をベースにしており、仮想マシンを起動する際にリソースを必要最小限
に抑えられます。サイズが小さくて軽量なので、起動が超高速で行えま
す。具体的には、約1 秒で仮想マシンが起動できるほどです。高速で安全
なコンテナと仮想マシンの実行を可能にしていることから、AWSのサー
バーレスサービスで利用されています（図6-11）。
サーバーレス環境をどのように利用するか？
サーバーレスサービスでは、利用者は物理サーバーや仮想サーバーの管
理が不要となります。これらはサービス提供者側で実施され、マネージド
サービスとして提供されます。AWS Lambda、Azure Functions、Google
Cloud Functionsなどが有名です。
利用者はアプリケーションの実行に必要なリソースの利用料のみを支払
うため、コストを抑えられます。
