VDIとは、Virtual Desktop Infrastructure の略です。その訳の通り、仮想
デスクトップ基盤の意味となります。
VDIでは、複数の仮想デスクトップ環境を1 台の物理コンピュータ上で
実行できます。利用者は仮想デスクトップ環境に自分自身が保有するデバ
イス（シンクライアント端末などと呼ばれます）から、ネットワーク経由
で必要なソフトウェアやアプリケーション、データにアクセスして利用で
きます（図5-3）。
後述するSBC方式と異なり、利用者ごとに個別に割り当てられたOSを
利用できます。
VDI方式は、物理環境を統合することによるコスト削減効果や、センタ
ー側でソフトウェアやアプリケーションを集中管理できることから、管理
面でのメリットがあります。また、データをセンター配置することによっ
てセキュリティ面でのメリットもあるので、企業や教育機関などで多く採
用されています。
1つのOSを複数の利用者で共用する方式
VDI方式は、利用者ごとにOS環境を独立させられる方式でした。一方、
SBC（Server Based Computing）方式は、1つのOSを複数の利用者で共用
する方式となります。1台のPCを複数の利用者でアカウント分割して利用
する環境をイメージしてください（図5-4）。
SBC方式は、別名リモートデスクトップ方式とも呼ばれていました。こ
ちらの名称の方がなじみのある方も多いかもしれません。VDI方式と比べ
