Using the Template

Once a template is saved, it is pretty easy to use. From a simple document template like the one I created in this chapter, users will want to create a new document. This can be done in a couple of ways:

  • In Windows Explorer, double-clicking a template actually starts a new document based on the template rather than opening it. To open the template, you must right-click the template and choose Open from the context menu.

  • If the template is saved in one of the template directories mentioned previously, use it to create a new document by choosing File New in Word. The template should appear on the General tab of the New dialog. If it was saved in a subfolder inside one of those template directories, it may appear on one of the other tabs instead.

You can also attach the template to an existing document, copying all of the styles and other components from the template into that document. To do this, open the document and use the Tools Templates and Add-Ins command (Figure 14-11). Click the Attach button to browse for a template to attach to the current document. As soon as the template is attached, all of the styles and other components are copied into the document unless the template and the document have styles that use the same name but are different. In this case, use the “Automatically update document styles” option to have the styles in the template replace the styles with the same names in the document.
