Insert Field

Synopsis

The Insert Field command provides nine different categories to choose from. Several of the categories include fields that can be inserted in other ways (such as through Insert Date and Time or Insert Index and Tables).

To insert a field, choose Insert Field, select a category and a field, and click OK (Figure 7-10). The field data immediately appears in the document. Once a field is inserted, the field content appears highlighted in gray. This serves as a reminder that the content is field data not a typed entry. To delete field data from your document, double-click the data and press Delete.

To see the actual field codes in a document instead of the data in the fields, choose Tools Options View tab Field codes. This causes field codes to appear in a set of curly brackets (a.k.a. French braces) in your document, followed by the data inserted through the field. If you want field data to be highlighted in gray at all times, choose Tools Options, and on the View tab, choose Always from the Field shading drop list. For more information on using fields, see Chapter 15.
