Edit Object

Synopsis

Edit Object is a submenu that becomes available only when a linked or embedded object is selected (for more on using linked and embedded objects, see Chapter 7). The submenu actually changes slightly depending upon the type of object selected. For a linked Excel chart, the submenu becomes Edit Chart Object. The commands available on the Edit Object submenu also change depending upon the type of object selected, but there are a few commands that are always present:

Open

This opens a linked or embedded object along with the object’s source application. This allows for editing the object using all the tools available in that application. For example, choosing Open on an Excel spreadsheet in a Word document launches Excel and opens the spreadsheet.

Edit

When working with a linked object, the Edit command works just like the Open command. Typically, this is also true when working with an embedded object created by an application that is not a part of Windows or Microsoft Office. When working with an embedded object from a supported application, the Edit command lets you edit the object directly from within Word. Toolbars for working with the object replace Word’s own toolbars. For example, when editing an embedded PowerPoint slide, Word’s toolbars are actually replaced with PowerPoint’s toolbars. Clicking anywhere in a document outside the object reopens Word’s toolbars and closes any extra toolbars.

Convert

This command only works with embedded objects. ...
