Synopsis

This command immediately closes the active document. If the document has been modified since being opened or saved, a dialog asks whether or not to save changes to the document.

With its new Single Document Interface, Word opens a new window for each open document. If multiple documents are open, clicking the Close button on any particular document closes that document. If only one document is open, clicking its Close button exits Word (the same as choosing File Exit). In addition, if only one document is open, a Close Window button also becomes available on the far right side of the menu bar. Clicking this button closes the document, but does not exit Word.
