Map services

The map service is the most prevalent of the ArcGIS Server service types. It is the way you make maps available over the web using ArcGIS Enterprise. Authored in ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro when publishing to a federated ArcGIS Server instance, a map service makes geographic features and their attributes available to client applications.

Map services are typically used to serve dynamic maps, dynamic layers, cached maps (such as basemaps), and features to clients, usually in the form of images that are rendered by the client (a web browser, for example). The most common use of map services is to show business and organizational data on top of a basemap from ArcGIS Online, a local basemap cache, or a basemap from another provider. ...
