Indexes

Attribute indexes can speed up queries made on the geodatabase by users. Indexes should be maintained (not just created, but maintained) only on fields that are routinely used in queries as each index added to your feature class or table slows down editing on that item. Attribute indexes can be created and deleted in ArcCatalog by going into a feature class or table's Properties on the Indexes tab of a feature class or table's properties. When creating indexes in an enterprise geodatabase, there are several very important rules to keep in mind:

  • Index names must be unique in the database.
  • Index names cannot contain spaces and must start with a letter.
  • Index names cannot contain reserved words.
  • Index names cannot be over 16 characters ...
