Tokens are a way for users to authenticate themselves without having to provide a username and password. A username and password are required to generate the token. The token is an encrypted string that contains the username, password, the token expiration time, and other proprietary information. To access a secured resource, the user presents the token in place of typical credentials, such as a username and password. For security reasons, tokens have lifespans, and, therefore, they expire. If a user attempts to use an expired token, they will not be authenticated and allowed access.
