ArcGIS Server comes preconfigured with a self-signed secure socket layer (SSL) certificate. Although not required, it is highly recommended that you purchase and install an SSL certificate from a trusted certificate authority (CA) or a local domain CA. SSL provides encryption of sensitive information (such as usernames and passwords for logging in to ArcGIS Server and Portal) and authentication to ensure that information is being sent where it is intended to go, and not to an imposter.
