Registering data sources
Registering data sources can only be done by those with Publisher or Administrative access to ArcGIS Server, thus making it a way to force users to reference data locations known and approved by Publishers and Admins. Both enterprise and file geodatabases are required to be registered with ArcGIS Server. If not registered, the data will be copied to the GIS server (see the next section). Data sources can be registered from ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcGIS Server Manager.
