Image services

While a geoprocessing service exposes a geoprocessing task through a web service over the internet, an image service exposes raster data over the internet. Publishing image services from rasters stored on disk or from a geodatabase is a core capability of ArcGIS Server.

ArcGIS Image Server provides two types of capabilities:

• Dynamic image services allow the publishing of mosaic datasets used to manage large collections of overlapping, often temporal, multiresolution imagery, such as orthophotos, elevation models, and LiDAR, or categorical rasters, such as land use classification
• Raster analysis, the second capability, enables massive distributed processing and analysis of rasters and imagery
