Qualitative and quantitative research refer to the type of data that is gathered. As the names suggest, quantitative data is about quantities and qualitative data is about qualities. Quantitative methods typically deliver lots of numbers that show how big an effect is or how many people experience it, whereas qualitative methods deliver fewer detailed findings in the form of words, videos, and images that show why and how an effect is happening.
These distinctions have various effects. The following diagram indicates some of these differences. Later in this chapter, we will describe the techniques of each approach, with examples.
