An alternative method of modulation uses a digital carrier signal comprising a pulse train which can be modulated to carry the required information. The amplitude, width or position of the pulses can be altered by the information signal as shown in Fig. 39.11. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is that form of modulation in which the amplitude of the pulse carrier is varied in accordance with some characteristic, normally the amplitude, of the modulating signal.
