合成生物学とは、「つくる」ことを通じて生物システムを理解するための生物学です。分子生物学、遺伝子工学などの知見に工学（エンジニアリング）の考え方を加え、新しい生物システムを作り出すことを目標としています。本書は、学生や市民科学者を対象に、合成生物学の基礎と実際の実験を解説する書籍です。バイオデザイン、DNA工学の基礎の解説にはじまり、「バナナの匂いのする大腸菌」や「細菌写真システム」を作るなどの実験を実際に行います。重要な生命倫理に関しても1つの章を設け、これまでの議論や今後の課題について紹介しています。
