It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

多くの企業は、サーバーのプロビジョニングのために自動化ツールを採用しているが、依然として誰
かがツールを実行してサーバーを作成し、そのときに個別にオプションを選択している。これは、手作
業でサーバーをプロビジョニングしていたときのプロセスが自動化ツール導入後もそのまま持ち越され
ているために起きることだ。その結果、サーバーの構築にかかる時間こそ短いかもしれないが、作ら
れたサーバーは統一が取れておらず、サーバーにパッチを当て、アップデートするプロセスをなかなか
自動化できなくなってしまう。
統一性が取れなくなるのは、新 VMに構成 / 設定を適用するときに人間が介在しているからである。
たとえば、誰かが仕様書を見て、どのユーザーアカウントを作成し、どのパッケージをインストールす
るかといったことを決めているものとする。その会社が高価なGUI駆動のオートメーションツールを
使っていても（そんなツールを使っているからこそと言うべきだが）、ふたりの別々の人は、たとえ同
じITチームに所属していても、少し異なるオプションを選ぶだろう。異なるユーザーチームが同じ要
件を異なる表現で指定していれば、さらにその可能性は高くなる。このようなプロセスで作られた VM
は、ほぼ同じ目的のために使われているほかの VMとはどうしても少し異なるものになってしまう。
