Automation involves taking manual processes and making them operate automatically so that they are repeatable. The first step in automating processes is to identify the current processes that are executed and understand how they work. We want to be able to identify bottlenecks and figure out where defects are most likely to be introduced. Once this understanding is in place, we can begin to select the appropriate tools to enable automation.
