Acting as early as possible

Whatever approach you take, one thing you do not want to do is to cut testing time short. Not performing the adequate amount of testing can have serious implications for the success of the project. Software that does not meet requirements and/or contains defects can put the whole project in jeopardy. The cost of inadequate testing may be far greater than whatever time or cost saving it offers.

The absolute best thing you can do is act as early as possible. Communicate with project management so that they have a detailed understanding of the current state of the project.
